How to Design a Great Looking Office in an Industrial Space

Source: garrettgee.me via Avery on Pinterest

Industrial style spaces and lofts can be a great option for creatives who want a lot of light and space in their office with a more modern vibe. Most frequently seen in cities like Manhattan or downtown Sono (South Norwalk), these spaces attract graphic design firms, retailers and tech firms amongst others. Love how in the above photo the wall decal is placed directly on to the concrete walls.

Working in an industrial space can mean contending with open floor plans, oversized architecture, high ceilings, rough finishes and even exposed pipes in ceiling. All of those elements give the space its charm. But if you are into a sleek modernized finish then industrial design is probably not for you.

The spaces below are filled with inspiration.

And check out the office accessories interspersed throughout if you want to bring an industrial feel to your home office.

Wishing I were at a beautiful hotel instead of in CT with Hurricane Sandy

Hello from CT in the path of Hurricane Sandy!

We are bunkered down and the winds and rain are swirling. For us, up on a hill closer to the Merritt Parkway, our biggest concern will be wind and downed power lines. Many of our friends have been evacuated down near the beaches and the storm surge is going to take its toll. We have made all of our preparations over the last few days. We are as ready as we can be.

Below some really cool looking hotels for your enjoyment.

Sending everyone warm wishes, prayers etc. No matter where you live, if you are in harm’s way, may you be safe, enjoy your family and friends.

See you on the flip side…

Time Travel in Office Design

So pleased to have been asked by Carmen Natschke of The Decorating Diva to be a part of their month long series on what inspires me.

My inspiration was an office project I worked on with the most wonderful creative client. I had so much fun designing his office, music room and music library at a Fairfield County church.

Travel Inspiration – Hotel Xeriscaping in Phoenix, AZ

Last week, our family took a once in a lifetime trip to the national parks of the West with a Tauck Bridges tour. One of the best parts of travel is the opportunity to see different types of design. I particularly enjoy design that reflects the local landscape and culture.

Our first stop was the Four Seasons in North Scottsdale. While my husband played eighteen holes at Troon, I snapped these shots around the hotel. I particularly loved how the pots were incorporated into the landscaping. This is xeriscaping from the greek word, xeros, which means dry. The primary purpose of xeriscaping is water conservation. I love its subtlety of texture and color.

Enjoy!

First Three Steps in the Design Process

This is the first in a two part series on the Design Process.

1. First we meet with the client and discuss what they love, who they are, how the decision making process works in their family or office. I provide a questionnaire with these questions – yes grown-up homework – and several other questions that help me get a sense of how you live and work. This builds a firm foundation on which to start a design plan.

2.  We create a plan, a timeline and a budget. I realize how hard it is to talk about the budget, after all none of us really wants to have a budget, but as I make selections for your space if an $8000 sofa is out of your price range it’s best if I know that up front. There are lots of stores with more affordable sofa options. One of the reasons you hire me is to save time. If I have your budget at the beginning, I can quickly and effectively work within it.

3.  We provide floor plans and other drawings as needed and design inspiration boards for your space. The space shown above has an open floor plan so all of the design elements needed to harmonize throughout the space.

In order to design the part, in this instance the fireplace wall, we need to envision the space as a whole. This room is long and narrow with no focal point. Adding a fireplace and bookshelves gives a place for the eye to land, shortens the room a bit and provides a warm and inviting feeling to the currently not very cozy space.

To the right is the framing for the fireplace. The blue tape gives a general range of the actual fireplace box within the framework. We visualized it on the wall first so that we could determine the right height. There is a dining room table in the room and I wanted to be sure the focal point can be seen beyond.

I can’t wait to share with you the final result!
